Daniel Cullen is an Irish artist, sculptor, and writer, originally from Dublin, now based in Gorey County Wexford.
To date, Daniel’s primary medium has been ceramics and mixed media. During an earlier career as Probation Welfare Officer with the Dept. of Justice, (1981-1998) Daniel continued to develop his art practice, taking time out to study at both (I.A.D.T.)Dun Laoghaire College of Art and Design and later Hertfordshire College of Art and Design, where, in 1995 he obtained his postgraduate professional Art Therapist qualification.
Daniel was subsequently responsible for the provision of Art Therapy services within Dept. of Justice rehabilitation programs, including Mount joy Prison’s Drug Rehab Program.
In 1998, Daniel retired from social work to become a full-time professional Sculptor. Since then he has produced an extensive body of work, including several large-scale works for Public bodies such as County Councils and Schools (listed below). In addition to private collections, his work is included in the National Collection of The Office of Public Works, and the Fingal County Council Public Collection.
Daniel has worked closely over many years, with community and special needs groups, making a considerable contribution within the area of Community Arts. He worked for several years as a freelance artist with the Irish Museum of Modern Art. As part of their Artist Team, he helped design and implement innovative programs facilitating engagement with the museum’s collection. He was Artist in Residence with Fingal County Council (2000-2006.)
In 2016 Daniel set up The Healing Art Studio, Gorey Wexford, an art therapy service providing support for emotionally troubled children. His current art practice continues to be sculpture based, incorporating mixed media, including work with Welford’s ‘Macamore’ clay, which he digs and processes in his studio.
In May 20/20 he completed a two years study program in Art Writing and Contemporary Art Practice at Gorey School of Art and has written several art reviews (under the pseudonym The Art Explorer) in response to exhibitions at the R.H.A., I.M.M.A., Wexford Art Centre, and Wexford Co Council Exhibition Space. His writings have been published in V.A.N. (V.A.I. News Sheet ) and on-line (see below) Daniel was recently selected with seven other Wexford based artists to participate in Peripheries Meet, an online mentoring program facilitated by Gorey School of Art.
